Capítulo 28: Batalla de Elefantes (3/3)
When everyone began shouting and preparing, Yundong finally breathed a sigh of relief. At least his people nearby still had fighting spirit and weren’t overwhelmed by the wave of war elephants.
This moment, Di Qing and his guards felt like outsiders. Everyone in the Victory Army was shouting and preparing; this surprised Di Qing greatly. The Victory Army wasn’t what he imagined; if it were just a purely money-driven army, they would have crumbled long ago. But these men didn’t…
"Three hundred fifty steps! Three hundred twenty steps! Crossbows fire!" Yundong threw his penetration dart with all his strength.
"Crossbows fire; gunpowder rounds fire; penetration darts ready!" Zhou Tong, Wu Ji, Sun Dazhi, Xiaolin, and Peng Jiu echoed him. At this critical moment, they had to trust their commander.
The veteran soldiers of the Ji Zi Camp were the first to respond, their loyalty to their commander deeply ingrained in them. Now holding positions as captains or squad leaders, they immediately shouted like their commander: "Crossbows fire; gunpowder rounds fire; penetration darts ready!"
When everyone started shouting and preparing, Yundong’s heart finally settled. At least his people nearby still had fighting spirit and weren’t overwhelmed by the wave of war elephants.
In this moment, Di Qing and his guards felt like outsiders. Everyone in the Victory Army was shouting and preparing; this surprised Di Qing greatly. The Victory Army wasn’t what he imagined; if it were just a purely money-driven army, they would have crumbled long ago. But these men didn’t…
"Three hundred steps! Two hundred steps! Crossbows fire!" Yundong threw his penetration dart, which landed and stuck into the ground. Meanwhile, behind him, the thunderous sound of crossbow releases echoed as gunpowder rounds drilled into the war elephants from three hundred meters.
The targets were too large; with their piercing cries, arrows shot through the air and pierced the bodies of several war elephants, causing blood to spurt everywhere. The war elephants began bellowing in pain, and several fell like mountains. The injured ones ran frantically, red-eyed.
A fire wall suddenly rose from the ground, flames mixed with thick smoke blocking the path of the war elephants.
Everyone had seen the effect of crossbows on elephants; a volley of arrows killed over ten in one go. This greatly boosted the morale of the Victory Army—these beasts could be defeated. The most potent gunpowder rounds hadn’t been used yet, and that was their trump card.
It seemed these elephants were heavily stimulated; they broke through the fire wall, ignoring the gunpowder on them, continuing to charge forward with deafening roars. Especially those riders on the elephants, after being suffocated by smoke, looked like terrifying demons as they continued to urge the elephants forward.
Yundong didn’t intend to use this two-hundred-meter range; he really wanted these war elephants. His army would need them for transportation once it advanced into Jiaozhi, and wherever they went, wild beasts would flee in fear. Such valuable creatures couldn’t be missed! (To be continued...)
